An article is any part of a literary genre, which consists of several members of a category of written words which are used to denote the real referents of their noun phrases. The category of articles comprises a vast part of modern literature. Articles may be in the form of poems, novels, and articles in a language that has no definite article, such as native languages or a colloquial use of everyday language. A definite article denotes a particular and singular identity whereas an indefinite article denotes a non-specific and plural identity.

In English, indefinite articles do not always denote singular or definite identities but can be used to suggest the variety, a situation that can express many things in one word. For example, “A girl kissed a boy.” “A man kissed a woman” “A cat kissed a dog” “A boy kissed a girl” are all examples of indefinite articles, all of which convey the idea of kissing and are therefore acceptable in written English, although they might not be accepted as acceptable in poetry. A definite article, on the other hand, denotes a single and particular identity, which can only be singular or indefinite. A number of English adjectives have indefinite articles as well, such as lovely, pretty, handsome, fat, courageous, handsome, and many others.

Because of this duality of the two types of articles in English, many people feel that English grammar is difficult, particularly in the construction of nouns and pronouns. This view is not necessarily true. The fact that most nouns and pronouns in English came with a singular or indefinite version, and that many words have no clear singular or indefinite version, lend themselves naturally to the English article usage. Although the rules regarding articles in English are far from perfect, English does permit for a wide degree of variation in article usage.

There are two main categories of articles in English – the indefinite article and the definite article. In the former, nouns that do not carry a definite gender are used as subject nouns; the articles for this purpose are also called articles of subject. These articles can be used as pronouns, as subjects in sentences, as titles of articles, and in many other ways. The articles of this type are often used to introduce new ideas or to refer back to an existing one. Thus we find “a boy’s house” as an article of speech, and “a boy’s house without windows” as a pronoun.

The definite article is also used to indicate a connection between two or more things. For instance “a ship at sea” denotes a relation between a boat and the sea. “a man’s house without windows” indicates a direct relationship between a man’s house and a window. Although the indefinite article can sometimes stand alone as the single words “it,” “that,” or “a ” it is usually introduced by a conjunction such as “with,” “in order,” “on account of,” or “because.” While the articles of this type are very common, they often take a secondary role in the written language, serving as a limitation on the number of possible complements for a single noun phrase.
