Articles in the Spanish Language
In the English language, articles are words used to define or describe something. Articles are divided into two main categories: noun articles and pronouns. An article is any part of a written class of words which are used for the purpose of indicating the identity of the subject of a noun phrase. The indefinite article ‘a’, for example, describes a body of water or a particular island in the Pacific Ocean.
There are two categories of articles used in English. These categories are definite articles and indefinite articles. The indefinite article is used to indicate a distance, while the definite article indicates a fixed point. For example, the word ‘the’ is used to indicate a place, while the word ‘the sea’ indicates a body of water, not a place. indefinite articles may be used to indicate time or duration. They also may be used to indicate the kind of action a word describes.
A number of English nouns have both a definite and indefinite article. These are often called articles of length. For example, the word ‘the’ and the word ‘day’ both denote the same thing (a definite article), but the word ‘the day’ refers to a span of time (a indefinite article). In this way, the articles of length in english can appear as a group, just like the articles of number, name, and number.
In English, articles are classified into three types: pronouns, nouns, and pronouns plus adjectives. A pronoun is a word that denotes a single person or thing. For example, we have the names ‘we’, ‘our’, ‘us’ and’my’ as pronouns. A noun is a single noun describing an entire set of things or people.
In addition, there are articles for number, magnitude, time, place, law, and many others. Many articles also describe parts of an object or action. For example, the articles ‘the’, ‘this’, ‘that’, ‘his’ and ‘its’ describe parts of an object while ‘the dog’ is used to describe a single item. There are no articles for time, excepting ‘the time’.
As you can see, the articles of English are grouped according to how they refer to a particular entity. A definite article refers to a single entity while an indefinite article refers to many entities. For example, the definite article ‘the man’ refers to only one thing;’man’ refers to many different things depending on the usage. Therefore, in Spanish, the articles of language refer more to the exact grammatical shape of a word, rather than to the exact word itself. The Spanish language has one definite article per sentence and one indefinite article per paragraph.
